Newly hired Firefighter already a hero!

I was fortunate enough to be able to recently attend a ceremony commemorating firefighter graduations and promotions.  I briefly met Kathryn Briggs and welcomed her to our city.  She is already a hero.  Please read the note I received from Steve Belau.

I wasn’t until I wrote this that it also occurred to me that, oh yeah, she is a female firefighter too (which a one time was, but should not have been controversial)…  We are fortunate to have not just her world class skills and training, but a whole department full of equally skilled and devoted individuals…

As a side note, a member of the fire civil service commission talked to me at the ceremony and mentioned how proud he was to get Kathryn on the force.

Steve’s Note:

One of Rochester’s newest firefighters KATHRYN BRIGGS is the RFD Member who entered the water in a cold water immersion suit to rescue the driver of a car that had careened over the embankment and into the river below the intersection of West River Road and Essex Parkway last night around 6:30 PM.

The driver of the car was standing on the top of the partially submerged vehicle about 25′ from shore.  The very wet driver was rapidly becoming hypothermic.  He shouted that he was uninjured from his location on the car.

Briggs was part of the rescue team that had to deploy a rope rescue system not only for the water rescue but also a retrieval system to get the victim up the steep embankment and into a waiting Gold Cross Ambulance.

Firefighter Briggs just graduated from the RFD Recruit Academy 12/29/2010 and was assigned to Fire Station 4 on 41st ST NW.  She was a rescue swimmer and diver in the U.S. Navy during her military service to the Country.

She goes off duty at approximately 0730 hours this morning and returns to work Wednesday morning at 0800 hours.  The telephone number at Station 4 is 285-XXXX.

Captain Mike Jacobson and Captain Kris Jungels were the Team Leaders.  Their hours and telephone number are the same as FF Briggs’ indicated above.

Details on the accident are available from Rochester Police Department.

The driver was taken to SMH.

Additional rescue details will be available at the morning news conference from Assistant Fire Marshal Lawrence Mueller.
