I just got back from the Olmsted County Environmental Commission (which I have been a member of since before I was an elected official). Tonight we unanimously voted to recommend that Olmsted County move ahead with the removal of the dam which was damaged in recent flooding.
Playing into our decision was the high cost of restoring Lake Shady to a recreational use. I did point out that as funds for recreational lakes were concerned Lake Shady would come in a distant 4th to Silver Lake, Cascade Lake, and Lake Zumbro. We did add some strongly worded language stating that the restoration of the river and upstream watershed needs to be done correctly and with the neighbors in mind.
I know that many good people are going to be disappointed with this decision.
